Frequently
Asked Questions:
I want to have my new website designed by
TMX. What do I need to do first?
The
early stages of the website development process vary
depending on several factors. Some clients come to
us with a very definite idea of what they want while
others know it's time for a web site, but
might like some assistance putting ideas together.
In either case, a few basic steps before contacting
us will help us better visualize your vision.
1)
Decide what you want to accomplish with your web site
- do you want to sell a product or service, provide
information, attract potential customers, keep in
touch with family, friends or business associates,
etc...?
2)
Make a list of other websites you have visited that
contain colors, layouts, functionality, or even an
overall 'feel" that you might like to emulate
on your new site, describing what it is about each
that you like.
3)
Gather up any graphics and text/copy you'd like to
include in the new site and save it to a CD or email
it to us. Text should be provided in notepad or Microsoft
Word formats. Photos and other images should be provided
in jpg, gif, or Photoshop formats and in the highest
resolution possible.
Please note however that we do have the ability to work with all standard graphic formats when necessary.
4)
If you do not yet have any graphics or copy/text for
your website, not to worry - TMX has associations
with copy writers and graphic artists who can provide
everything from a simple logo to super high-quality
graphics packages including website artwork, brochures,
envelopes, letterheads and print ads!.
Please
feel free to contact us if you have any questions
along the way.
What
does it cost to develop a website?
Website development cost can vary greatly depending
on your needs. Prices can start as low as $50.00 for
a 'business card' site and run all the way to $20,000+
for fully automated database driven sites. Generally speaking though, the cost of a standard HTML-based websites tends to average approximately $80 to $100 per page. In other words, a 5-page HTML site complete & delivered will generally run between four and five hundred dollars.
What
is web hosting?
In order for anyone with an Internet connection to
access your website, your web pages need to be housed
on a server with an uninterrupted, unchanging, 24/7
connection to the web. A web host is the person or
company who provides this server space, usually on
a monthly, semi-annual, or annual basis.
What is bandwidth?
Bandwidth (also referred to as transfer) is the amount
of data that your web host allows your site and recieve
over a set period of time, usually per month.
Each
character that your website sends out takes up a byte.
Images can be as large as 100,000 bytes, and downloads
can easily reach sizes of 10,000,000 bytes. To that
end, bandwidth transfer per month is usually allocated
by gigabytes - one gigabyte is 1 billion bytes.
What exactly is webspace?
Webspace is the amount of hard drive space your web host
gives you on which to store your web site. It is just like the disk space you have available on your home or office computer except that it holds the files that make up your website and is connected directly to the internet.
Every
single character that appears on your website has
to be stored somewhere. It is this disk space that
grants you such storage space. Each character takes
up one byte. Most web hosts offer web space in megabytes
- one megabyte is roughly equal to 1 million bytes.
Usually
the actual HTML content (the web pages themselves)
of your website is relatively small - it is the extra
images, downloads, emails, and so forth that genarally
takes up the majority of your disk space.
What is a domain name?
A domain name is a unique tag that identifies you
to other computers connected to the Internet. Every
domain name represents a set of numbers called an
IP address. For example, one of TMX Web Service's
IP addresses is 75.126.140.235. So, you could type
that number into your web browser’s address
bar, or simply type ‘tmxwebservices.com’.
Either entry will take you to our website.
